Punta Trettu vs. Sant’Antioco: My Unforgettable Kitesurfing Experience in Sardinia

A Review by Julia, an Experienced Kiter Who Visited Punta Trettu in September

I’ve been kitesurfing for over a decade, traveling to some of the most famous kite destinations in the world—from Brazil’s Jericoacoara to Tarifa in Spain. When I planned my Sardinia trip last September, I had two key locations on my list: Punta Trettu and Sant’Antioco.

Each of these spots offers something entirely unique, but after spending an incredible week at Punta Trettu, I can confidently say—it is truly one of the best kitesurfing destinations in Europe.

In this review, I’ll share my experience comparing Punta Trettu and Sant’Antioco, highlighting the best kitesurfing conditions, wind reliability, learning opportunities, and overall vibe of each place. If you’re planning a kitesurfing trip to Sardinia, this guide will help you decide which spot suits your level and style best.

Punta Trettu: The Perfect Flat-Water Paradise for Kitesurfing

Punta Trettu is unlike any other place I’ve kited. Located in southern Sardinia, this hidden gem is a strip of land extending into the sea, forming a huge lagoon with shallow, flat water and constant wind.

From the moment I arrived, I knew I was in a true kitesurfing paradise. The setup, the conditions, and the overall vibe were just perfect.

Why Punta Trettu Is a Kitesurfer’s Dream Spot

Flat & Shallow Water: The biggest advantage of kiting in Punta Trettu is its mirror-flat water. Whether you’re a beginner or an advanced rider practicing new tricks, this spot is ideal because there are no waves or chop to slow you down.

Consistent Wind: The wind here is incredibly reliable. During my stay in September, I got kiteable wind every single day. The Mistral (NW) and Scirocco (SE) winds dominate, and thanks to the Venturi effect caused by the narrow water channel between Sardinia and Sant’Antioco, the wind is even stronger than forecasted.

Kitesurfing for All Levels: Unlike Sant’Antioco, which is mainly a wave spot, Punta Trettu is perfect for all levels. I saw absolute beginners taking their first lessons and freestyle kiters landing impressive tricks—all in the same spot.

No Crowded Beaches: Unlike wave spots, where summer beach restrictions can be an issue, Punta Trettu is dedicated to kitesurfing. There are no sunbathers or swimmers, so you can launch and ride freely without restrictions.

Sant’Antioco: A Challenging Wave Spot for Advanced Kiters

Sant’Antioco, on the other hand, is completely different from Punta Trettu. This rugged island connected to Sardinia by a bridge is home to some of the best wave-riding spots in the region.

While Punta Trettu is perfect for learning and freestyle, Sant’Antioco is best for experienced wave riders looking for strong winds and big swells.

Main Kitesurfing Spots in Sant’Antioco

🏄 Spiaggia Grande – A powerful wave spot with Mistral (NW) and Ponente (W) winds, recommended for advanced riders only. The waves here can easily reach 4 meters in strong wind conditions.

🏄 Maresciallo – One of the most extreme wave spots, where waves break directly onto rocks. This is only for pro-level kitesurfers who are comfortable navigating dangerous conditions.

🏄 Coequaddus – A slightly more forgiving wave spot, but still challenging. It works best with Scirocco (SE) and Levante (E) winds.

Important Note: Kitesurfing in Sant’Antioco is only possible in the winter season (September to May). During summer, the beaches are crowded with tourists, and kitesurfing is often restricted or prohibited.

Who Should Choose Sant’Antioco?

Experienced wave riders looking for challenging conditions
Kitesurfers who love big waves and strong winds
Riders with excellent board control and wave-riding skills
